VOGUE HK: Must-see art exhibitions in Hong Kong in June 2026 - Phantom(’s) Presence | PODIUM gallery
01 June 2026
Japanese artist Shimon Kamada presents his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Phantom(’s) Presence, drawing inspiration from childhood and adolescent photo albums. Transforming memory into a series of scenes suspended between reality and dream, Kamada constructs images in which streets, interiors, and natural landscapes appear familiar yet are imbued with an uncanny sense of distance. Distorted light, deep shadows, and blurred human figures intertwine to form psychologically charged narrative spaces.
The exhibition title gestures both to the ghost-like persistence of memory and to the perceptual disjunction associated with the phenomenon of phantom limbs, probing how people and moments that have already vanished continue to linger within the depths of consciousness. Through layered brushwork and accumulated traces of color, Kamada captures the emotional residue left by the passage of time. Viewers are invited to step into a reconstructed field of memory, drifting slowly between nostalgia, loss, and imagination, and encountering memory in its most fragile yet compelling form.
