Biography
Working with photography, video and installation, Diane Severin Nguyen (b. 1990, lives and works in New York), through material and sculptural experimentations, approaches the photographic moment as one of transformation. She is particularly interested in exceeding photography as a mode of documentation, and engages with it rather as a set of conditions shaped by desire and speculation. Her video work narrativises these tensions by examining the histories of power, victimhood and forms of propaganda that underpin cultural (and self) image-making. Her recent solo presentations include Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2024), Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai (2023), Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston (2022), Huis Marseille Museum of Photography, Amsterdam (2022), The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2022), SculptureCenter, New York (2022), Stereo, Warsaw (2022), among others. She also participated in group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2024), Museum of Contemporary Art, Tallinn (2023), The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2023), Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2023), Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2023), Para Site, Hong Kong (2022), Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2022), SALT GALATA, Istanbul (2022), Sala Impasti, Milan (2022), Jeu de Paume, Paris (2022), MoMA PS1, New York (2021), Berlin Atonal, Berlin (2021), Power Station of Art, Shanghai (2021), among others. Her works are in the collections of Whitney Museum of American Art; Hammer Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art Warsaw; Kadist Foundation; Nguyen Art Foundation; Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography; FRAC Alsace, and Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, among others.
