Biography
Oscillating between a highly stylised technique and uncanny realism, the prismatic compositions of Srijon Chowdhury (b. 1987, lives and works in Portland) mine elements from daily life to find the universal in the quotidian. Interweaving interests in philosophy, religion, ecology, and art history, Chowdhury’s intricately detailed, saturated, and hypnotic narrative compositions transform the artist’s immediate environment into immersive dreamscapes where the boundaries between our physical reality and the metaphysical, mythological and the supernatural dissolve. Chowdhury has presented solo exhibitions at P·P·O·W Gallery, New York (2024); Ciaccia Levi, Paris & Milan (2021 & 2023); Frye Art Museum, Seattle (2022); SE Cooper Contemporary, Portland (2022); Ciaccia Levi, Paris (2021), Foxy Production, New York (2021); Foxy Production, New York (2020); among others. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Oregon Contemporary Artists’ Biennial, Portland (2024); FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2023); François Ghebaly, Los Angeles (2022); Foxy Production, New York (2022); Et al., San Francisco (2022); Franz Kaka, Toronto (2021); Chapter NY, New York (2021); Deli Gallery, New York (2020); Nir Altman, Munich (2020); Magasins Généraux, Pantin (2019); White Columns, New York (2019); among others. He has been awarded grants from the Oregon Arts Commission (2018); Regional Arts and Culture Council (2018); Andy Warhol Foundation, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and Calligram Foundation (2017); among others.
