Biography
Incorporating Eastern art-making techniques and Western stylistic preferences in his paintings, Tseng Chien-Ying (b. 1987, lives and works in Taipei) stages and juxtaposes exquisite, pictorial scenes subtly adorned with elements of cruelty, absurdity, and void, unveiling the obscure violence in the subconscious of human existence through morbid humour and uncanny storytelling. Tseng had his recent solo exhibitions at Each Modern, Taipei (2022), Red Gold Fine Art, Taipei (2020, 2017), and Nanhai Gallery (2013). His recent group exhibitions include Almine Rech Gallery, Shanghai (2024), Tao Art Space, Taipei (2023), Gallery Common, Tokyo (2023), INKStudio at Art Basel Hong Kong (2023), Galerie Du Monde, Hong Kong (2022), ISland Art Space, Taipei (2022), Chishang Art Centre, Chishan (2022), Moon Gallery, Taipei (2022), a-space gallery, Warsaw/Tokyo/Taipei/Rheinfelden (2021), and Taiwan Biennial, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung (2020). Tseng received his MFA from the Taipei National University of the Arts.
