PODIUM is delighted to present 'Polyphonic Feminine', a group exhibition that celebrates the vibrant and diverse artistic practices of Asian women artists, who have closely collaborated with the gallery throughout its inaugural year. Featuring the compelling works of Shuyi Cao, Genie Hui, Phoebe Hui, So Young Park, Lorraine Ren, and Yi To, the presentation highlights their heterogeneous voices and perspectives, which are especially vital in today’s political landscape. By showcasing their unique artistic sensibilities rooted in rich cultural heritage, the exhibition interweaves a tapestry of contemporary experiences that not only celebrates individual artistic expressions but also fosters a transnational dialogue that offers profound insights that transcend the dominant Western, patriarchal operational logic.

The exhibition opens on 15 February 2025 (Sat) from 4 to 7 PM and is on view till 15 March 2025 (Sat).

PREVIEW

Shuyi Cao explores alchemical approaches to material, matter, and osmosis of knowledge. Through archeological speculation and ecological fiction, she contemplates the porous plurality of relations between science, technoculture, mythology, and cosmology. Her multi-medium sculptures and installations synthesise various organic and inorganic materials, and natural and artificial processes. Genie Hui modernises traditional ink works on paper by infusing them with vibrant hues and phantasmagoric imageries. Inspired by her Thai heritage and Buddhist upbringing, her works captivate the viewers to meditate on energy flows and creation processes. The uncanny, bodily landscapes and fantastical compositions created by the meticulous brush strokes represent the interconnectedness in universe and boundless cosmic possibilities.

Meanwhile, Phoebe Hui investigates the interrelationship between language, sound and technology, exploring interdisciplinary ideas drawn from the philosophy of science, system aesthetics and the concept of indeterminacy. So Young Park navigates between the ambiguous boundaries of form and colour and creates surrealist, liquid metal-esque paintings that evoke trans-temporal, déjà vu dreamscapes, exploring how one may relate to a collective of life forms in a planetary approach.

Elsewhere, Lorraine Ren weaves complex emotional landscapes that oscillate between the familiar and the strange, the mundane and the fantastical. Her paintings challenge conventional perceptions of time and space by distorting ordinary objects and employing botanical motifs to evoke intimacy and imagination. In her paintings, Yi To applies and accumulates thin layers of diluted oil paint in earthy hues and occasionally marble dust to create obscure, chalky compositions, evoking enigmatic bodily, microcellular transmutations. Probing the materiality and the limits of the body, she deconstructs, rescales, and zooms in and out, shifting perceptions and bending spacetime to form nuanced storytelling about the subject matter.
